7. 40km/h Signs Not Facing Traffic

The LEDs used in school zone lights are very directional. When viewed from in front they are extremely bright however when viewed from an angle the brightness reduces by up to 90%.

Virtually all of the RTA's flashing light signs face down the footpath rather than facing the traffic. The lights are also mounted flat rather than being tilted downwards. As a result most appear very dim.

One perfect example is Princes Hwy Blakehurst northbound at the intersection of King Georges Rd. There is a bend in the road right where the 40km/h sign is installed meaning the lights are almost invisible to the approaching traffic, especially from the right-hand lane.

For the fraction of a second that the lights are potentialy visible, drivers are concentrating on negotiating the bend rather than gazing at road signage.
